The Rochester Minnesota
airport was originally founded in 1928 with 285 acres and was owned
and operated by the Mayo Foundation. In 1940 it expanded by 85 acres
and improved the facility and paved the runways. Mayo Foundation
turned over the airport in 1945 to the city of Rochester Minnesota
in order to allow it to be eligible for federal grants. The
Rochester Minnesota airport was officially named Lobb Field in 1952
but was later relocated in 1960 and renamed Rochester Municipal
Airport.
It wasn't until 1995 with
the addition of US Customs that it was named Rochester International
Airport. It is now approximately 2,300 acres and is serviced daily
by two major airlines, and two major cargo carriers. The Rochester
Airport Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mayo Clinic and
continues to operate the Rochester International Airport for the
City of Rochester Minnesota.
